This photograph shows dry food distribution to a woman and her family at a relief camp surrounding the Biafran war zone in Nigeria; Cotton seed meal (CSM) and dried were distributed in this camp along with local carbohydrates of yam and casava. The CDC was asked in 1967 to assist the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in disease control and death prevention. CDC’s EIS officers worked in the Nigerian-Biafran war zone, further expanding CDC’s efforts into malnutrition and famine relief. Dr. William H. Foege was the first CDC representative and served from September to November, 1967. Dr. Lyle Conrad replaced him in December, 1967 and stayed until March, 1968. Also in 1968, Paul Schnitker became the first and only EIS officer to die in the line of duty when his plane crashed en route to Nigeria.
