This photograph was taken somewhere in the U.S. during a debriefing held by the Ebola task force after the Zaire outbreak of 1976. Among the members identified are CDC’s Dr. Karl M. Johnson, (center) and Dr. Joel Breman (right). The Ebola outbreak in Zaire, now known as the Democratic Republic of Congo, started in the town of Yambuku, and from there spread to surrounding areas. A Kinshasa area hospital was sealed off during the outbreak, helping to bring the situation under control. The total number of cases in Zaire was 318 and had a mortality rate of 88%. This image was provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention/Dr. Lyle Conrad. [0003-0702-0918-3754] by 0003
