Description This photo shows a health official (right), dressed in protective garments, standing next to a Zairian during a 1976 Ebola investigation. The 1976 outbreak in Zaire started in the town of Yambuku, and spread to surrounding areas. In Kinshasa, Zaire’s capital city, an area hospital was sealed off during the outbreak, and the situation came under control. The total number of cases in Zaire, which is now called the Democratic Republic of Congo, was 318, with a mortality rate of 88%.
