Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) officers from the CDC visited the country in 1964 because of a smallpox outbreak on the subcontinent. Largely through the effort of the CDC and partners such as India, smallpox was eradicated in 1977.

This image was created in 1964 and provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention/Dr. Alex Langmuir.
