Roper (right), former Director of the CDC (1990 – 1993), presenting a 1993 CDC Achievement Award to Dr. James W. Buehler, (center), who at the time was the Associate Director for the CDC’s National Center for HIV, STD and TB Prevention.
During his stint at the CDC, Dr. Buehler worked extensively to advance the science and application of public health surveillance to bolster disease prevention and control, while publishing widely in these areas. During the anthrax outbreak in 2001, he served as one of two team leaders assigned by CDC to manage its anthrax field investigation and response team in New Jersey. He is nationally and internationally recognized as an expert in disease surveillance.
Dr. Buehler became a faculty member at Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health in 2002. There he works at the Center for Public Health Preparedness and Research, and serves as a consultant to the state of Georgia’s Division of Public Health.
