The cause of Lassa fever was found to be the Lassa virus, named after the town in Nigeria where the first cases originated. This Arenaviridae member is zoonotic, or animal-borne, and is a single-stranded RNA virus. This image was created in 1977 and provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
