Description This 1977 picture depicts Dr. Sandy as he examines a Lassa fever patient in the Segbwema, Sierra Leone clinic. About 15%-20% of patients hospitalized for Lassa fever die from the illness. However, overall only about 1% infected result in death. The death rates are highest for women in the 3rd trimester of pregnancy, and 95% mortality for their fetuses.
