Description This micrograph reveals submucosal hemorrhage in the small intestine, in a case of fatal human anthrax; H&E stain; Mg. 240X.
The first symptoms of gastrointestinal anthrax are nausea, loss of appetite, bloody diarrhea, and fever, followed by severe stomach pain. One-fourth to more than half of GI anthrax cases lead to death. Note the associated arteriolar degeneration. Image taken by Dr. Marshal Fox in 1976.
