This 1976 photo, taken in Bumba, Zaire, showed CDC’s Dr. Karl M. Johnson seated while facing another major set back in transporting suspected Ebola victim, Del Conn. Del Conn, shown here through the vehicle window at left, became ill with Ebola-like symptoms while he was working on the Yambuku survey effort. Fearing that Conn was infected with the deadly virus, prompted his subsequent evacuation from Yambuku to South Africa. Evacuation of the patient took some time, for it was feared that such exposure of the newly discovered Ebola virus could facilitate its spread locally, as well as internationally.
