This photograph shows a doctor taking blood from an Alabama resident that had been living near a possibly contaminated stream.

In the early 1980’s, the CDC conducted a complete health study of residents in an Alabama neighborhood to determine DDT and PCB (polychlorinated biphenyls) levels among its citizens. Health concerns arose when DDT (Dichloro-Diphenyl-Trichloroethane) contaminated fish were discovered in a nearby stream.

PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) are a group of toxic chemicals that were widely used as coolants, insulators and lubricants. PCBs are of concern because they concentrate in the food chain resulting in health hazards to humans, fish and wildlife. Congress banned the manufacture of new PCBs in 1976 and PCBs still in use are strictly regulated.
