Description Late in the evening on September 21, 1989, the eye of Hurricane Hugo struck the coast of South Carolina north of Charleston. Winds of 135 mph, a tidal surge of 12-17 feet and heavy rains killed dozens of people, and caused 7 billion dollars in damage. CDC personnel were deployed to assist communicable disease and safety-related issues. This image was provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
