Picture of CDC’s first lab containment suits worn by a technician inside the animal laboratory during Lassa fever and Ebola hemorrhagic fever research activities. To work in a Biosafety Level-4 (BSL-4) laboratory within close proximity to deadly Level-4 pathogens, specialized protective equipment is worn, and procedural protocols are followed in order to prevent laboratorians from contamination by these organisms. Fresh, uncontaminated air is administered through a tube directly into the air-tight suit, while waste air is removed through this tubed line directly from the suit, keeping the system self-contained, and free of pathogenic organisms.
