This CDC EIS officer is shown working in a plastic isolator unit, which was used during the 1976 Ebola outbreak in Zaire, now known as the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This isolator was used as a field laboratory where health officials prepared specimens that were to be further examined at the CDC. Health practitioners such as EIS officers must be well protected from this harmful virus, for exposure due to direct contact with the blood and/or secretions of an infected person easily facilitates its spread from patient to treatment personnel.
