This popular Rhodesian hitchhiking spot was visited by 2 travelers who were later hospitalized during the country’s 1975 Marburg outbreak. Note the man standing on an embankment next to a tree. This is where the two Marburg patients, cases #1 and #2, rested during their travels. Both travelers were later treated in a Johannesburg, South African hospital after symptoms of the hemorrhagic fever became evident. This photograph was part of an ongoing Marburg vector investigation, and was taken three months after the patients’ travels in Wankie, Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). This image was created in 1975 and provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. [0004-0703-0821-1565] by 0004
