In this photograph, a nurse is shown standing near sewage pipes outside of an Infectious Disease Hospital in Johannesburg, South Africa where three patients were hospitalized with Marburg disease. The hospital’s sewage came under close surveillance during this outbreak, as well as all equipment, gowns, gloves, clothing from patients and their rooms. The sewage was treated heavily with local chlorine liquid. This image was created in 1975 and provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention/Dr. J. Lyle Conrad.
