Description
In 1968, Dr. William H. Foege of the CDC, seated closest to the camera, is shown issuing ration cards to the needy in Port Harcourt, Nigeria.

During the Nigerian-Biafran war, this field station was established by the Lutheran Missionary team to establish standards of nutrition assessment, feeding operations, etc. The CDC was asked in 1967 to assist the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in disease control and death prevention at numerous relief camps outside of the warzone.

This image was provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
